Why are small and medium-sized farms qualified as the backbone of agriculture in our country?
Because they care of and cultivate over 85% of the usable arable land in Bulgaria. After our accession to the EU, the size of a small farm increased from 6 to about 20 ha, and as a medium-size agricultural farm is determined one with more than 50 ha of land for cultivation (own land).
The existing hydro-meliorative structure in the country and its condition makes us think about the most effective methods of irrigation, by using rationally every drop of water. The irrigation machines fully meet this requirement. They combine advantages such as: precise irrigation, low operating costs, low filtration rate, etc. With irrigation machines, a small farm can expand its potential, increasing its yields through watering.
But there are also sectors where irrigation machines are not applicable – these are the areas with permanent crops – vineyards and fruit trees. There, undoubtedly, the most suitable method is drip irrigation. Through the drip irrigation system, water is delivered directly to the most root-saturated area. Thus, the losses from evaporation are minimized, better results are achieved through low energy intensity and efficient irrigation management, as well as long-term exploitation of the plantation and the system. In addition to satisfying the optimal need of plants (perennials) for water, the drip irrigation is also the most cost-effective way. The amount of water supplied to the plant is distributed over such a period of time that the active root-dwelling layer of the plant manages to absorb almost 100% of the water. This type of irrigation also minimizes the erosion processes.
Thanks to modern control systems, almost all aspects of the irrigation process can be automated and monitored – for example, the start of the diesel generator and the electric pump, the setting of the solenoid valves, the process of fertilization, monitoring of various indicators of soil and air, etc.
